Following threats by the Conservative Party before the general election t o withdraw investment from the Royal Navy’s “Elizabeth Class” aircraft carrier programme, I sought and received reassurance from the Ministry of Defence that the Labour Party remained unequivocally committed to continue with both ships. My sustained lobbying was rewarded with an unambiguous written statement from the current Minister of State for the Armed Services Bill Rammell, who recognises the long-term employment importance of this project for the people of the Gosport peninsula and region. The redevelopment at Rowner is to be welcomed, but not at the expense of the environment
or community facilities. Graham recently helped the community to organise a “Save
our Bridge” campaign to retain the important Howe Road foot bridge and the trees
& grassybanks at Oakthorne/Mandarin. Following sustained lobbying by Graham, local
families, children & Rowner
school teachers, the Council agreed to omit these areas from the Compulsory Purchase
Orders for the scheme and to give an assurance that these areas will not be included
in any future orders. Graham is currently campaigning to retain an existing hall
(Magennis Hall) for community use as the housing authority wishes to demolish it
to build yet more houses! Graham got involved in a campaign in the Old Road area
of Gosport, where the Council wanted to close an existing community facility that
is used to run homework clubs and other important community projects. Graham considers
that it is very shortsighted to make such derisory savings in areas of deprivation.
